What Exactly is Tinea Versicolor?
Tinea versicolor is a common fungal infection that often affects adolescents and young adults. The term versicolor refers to the fact that it causes the affected skin to change color and become either lighter or darker than surrounding skin. The most common areas it affects are the shoulders, back, and chest. At times, it can affect folds of skin, such as the crook of the arm, the skin under the breasts, or the groin. The face is usually spared, although sometimes children can get it there. There may be just a few spots or so many that it gives the appearance that the affected skin is normal while the unaffected skin around it seems to have a problem.

Sun Spots: Fact vs. Myth
MYTH: Sun Spots are caused by the sun
FACT: Though Sun Spots are most commonly found in individuals that live in tropical areas with high humidity and high temperatures, the fungal infection is not caused by the sun. Sun exposure will only make the fungal infection more apparent. It is a common skin condition caused by an overgrowth of yeast on the skin’s surface. Other factors that may cause sun spots are: Excessive sweating, Oily skin, Hormonal changes & Immunosuppression (this is when your immune system is unable to protect your body from the growth of yeast or fungus on your skin or elsewhere).

Caring for the Skin You're In - More Tips!
Seems this summer has been a season of Augusts, and with little rain, a lake, pool or the beach look mighty good! Certainly makes one wonder what our “normal” August is going to do. But what might the summer do to our skin?
Walker County Agent Meredith Henry, whose expertise is family and consumer sciences, spoke to the master gardeners at their August monthly meeting about the need for us to take care of our skin this summer. One might think we have heard the information plenty of times but really now, can we hear it enough? According to Henry, Texans have a one in three chance for skin cancer. Further, skin cancer rates are rising every decade.

Sun Damage: Bake Now, Pay Later
Picture this: you’re lying on a white sand beach in your bikini, listening to nothing but the salty surf ebb and flow upon the shore. Sounds delightful, right? For plenty of people, summer means spending time at the shore.
And many are still willing to accept the risk of skin cancer in exchange for a glowing tan. If you’re one of them, and you’re ready to accept the risk of cancer, are you also ready to accept the way you’ll look at 40? At 50?

The Truth About Sunscreen
We couldn't do without the sun. It keeps us warm, fuels photosynthesis so we have spinach to eat and helps our bodies make Vitamin D. We couldn't see across the street without the sun.But it also has a dark side.
Read the complete article here:
If we fly too close to Old Sol, stay for too long on a beach, pool or tennis court, its UVB rays penetrate the top layers of our skin, causing sunburn. Its longer UVA rays penetrate the dermis, the next layer down, causing wrinkles, age spots and, too often, skin cancer.

Sooth Your Skin After a Sunburn
As the president of skin-care and cosmetic lines Kiehl’s USA and Shu Uemura, Chris Salgardo knows he should take good care of his skin, especially during the summer. Even so, Mr. Salgardo confesses, he sometimes gets a little sunburned.
Mr. Salgardo, 39 years old, typically spends hours outside skateboarding, biking or playing basketball during the summer. While he wears sunscreen, at times,he begins to feel he’s getting too much sun. When that happens, he starts looking for a shady spot and immediately applies more sunscreen or a moisturizing body lotion. For “instant relief,” he says, he often spritzes on some water from a little spray-on canister he carries.
